Team Orion – RC & RG Sweep CRCRC

This year marked the 21st Annual CRCRC Winter Midwest Championships in Hilliard, OH. The Champs are known for being the first big electric race of the New Year, always being held in the beginning of January. Drivers from as far as New York and California made the trip to the Midwest for this great event. The track was very well prepared and maintained throughout the weekend. The layout was very technical with a big triple jump, stutter bumps, and allot of elevation changes. Super high traction allowed the racers to run slicks for the entire race. The race format was changed a little from years past. Instead of using the “Rocket Round” format with 3 qualifiers. The race would now run 4 rounds of qualifying with points used with the drivers 2 best points counting. The qualifiers would be 5 minutes long, with the mains at 7 minutes! Last year Team Orion Factory Driver Ryan Cavalieri swept all three modified classes and was back to defend his titles.

In the 2wd Modified class, RC would start 2nd on the grid behind local hero Jesse Robbers.

A-Main #1: After a mistake by Robbers over the first jump on the first lap, Cavalieri took over the lead. Halfway through the main Cavalieri made a small mistake and Colorado’s Dustin Evans took the lead. Cavalieri then started applying allot of pressure for a few laps causing a mistake by Evans, then Cavalieri got by and took it home for the win.

A-Main #2: Robbers and Cavalieri broke away from the field at the start. Cavalieri made a pass for the lead and never looked back giving him his first championship of the weekend.

In the Modified Truck Class, Ryan would start on the pole position with his Team Orion Brushless powered T4.

A-Main #1: At the start, second qualifier Chad Due put an aggressive pass on Cavalieri. RC gave Due room knowing that he had 7 minutes to make his move. After a few laps, Cavalieri got by Due and began to stretch out his lead. Team Orion Factory Driver Ronnie Gardner started in the 6th qualifying spot also used his Vortex power to his advantage and made it though the field all the way to the second position. With only a few laps to go, Gardner caught Cavalieri and was only a corner behind. Cavalieri with no mistakes went on to take the win. Gardner held on for second.

A-Main #2: Cavalieri had a clean start and began to check out. Unchallenged for the entire 7 minutes, RC went on to capture his second championship of the weekend.

A-Main #3: With Cavalieri already sealing up the overall win, his spot was left open on the grid for the final main. Gardner finished 2nd the first main and had a DNF for the second main. Like in A-Main #1, Gardner made his way up through the field very fast. After a mistake by the leaders, Gardner took over the lead and began to stretch it out. At the end of the main, RG finished with the win by 7 seconds. This gave Ronnie 2nd overall behind Cavalieri.

Ryan Cavalieri Tq’ed all four rounds in the 4wd Modified class. This was also his first race running the Team Orion Vortex brushless motor in his B44.

A-Main #1: Cavalieri launched off the line when the tone went off and was able to clear the front section of jumps in front of the drivers stand at will that most drivers had difficulty with allowing him to pull away. After the 7 minutes was up, Cavalieri crossed the finish line first with a big gap back to second. RC’s Team Orion 4200SHO’s gave him the power and runtime he needed to drive strapped for the entire main.

A-Main #2: Ryan once again had a great start and stretched out his lead every lap by doing the front section. After Ryan had built up a big lead, he then put it on cruise control and took it home for the win. This giving RC a clean sweep in all three modified classes two years in a row!

New to CRCRC this year was the Outlaw Truck Class. The rules were simple: any hard case Li-Po battery was allowed with any brushless motor. The qualifying format was the same as the other electric classes. Instead of triple A Mains, the Outlaw class would run one 20-minute main to determine the champion. Team Orion Factory Drivers Ronnie Gardner and Joe Pillars both signed up for this great class to help support the push of Li-Po batteries.

After qualifying was complete, Gardner would start second and Pillars would start third for this 20-minute main event. Gardner and Pillars both ran 2 Team Orion 3600 Carbon Race Spec batteries wired in parallel with a Team Orion 6.5 Vortex brushless motor. With a clean start, the top three drivers pulled away from the field. With a couple laps completed, Gardner made a pass for the lead. Pillars then made his way into second. With 10 minutes down and 10 minutes to go Gardner pulled out a big lead. Pillars was then passed by a hard charging Chad Due for the second position. Due then caught Gardner with about 5 minutes to go. Gardner made a mistake allowing Due to get by. With only a couple laps left, Gardner put on a charge and caught up to Due with one lap to go. Gardner then tripled over Due on the last lap for the lead and win! Pillars finished a respectable 3rd with the same power package as winner Ronnie Gardner.
